20 Weeks – My Pregnancy Update

Half. Way. There.

I cannot believe that I am already on the countdown to being a mother of three! I haven’t given any updates really up until now as I think that on your third, it’s just not as exciting. You’ve been there, worn the oversized t-shirt. Plus, I have just been so busy looking after the kids, I barely have time to sit down and think about it. So it is nice to take a moment and share where my head is at.

The Bambino

Well, I am so glad to say that Baby J (our new name for bubs) is doing great. I have been attending the MD Clinic for private scans which have really given me the reassurance of knowing that my little person is thriving. The highlight had to be my anomaly scan and the moment when Baby J decided to suck their thumb! Absolute cuteness overload. At each scan, our consultant is also monitoring how Baby is growing and so far so good. My daughter was a teeny tiny dot (5lbs 7oz) and had some mild issues after birth due to low birth weight. I’m grateful that I can relax this time around knowing that my private scans will keep an eye on the baby’s weight gain and progress.

My next private scan will be 28 weeks and I’m really looking forward to it! The details are fabulous and we will be moving to 4D soon. By the way, I did find out the sex of the baby (at 16 weeks actually) but we are keeping mum on that for now.

Mummy Dearest

Oh this Mama is wiped out. You know how at 20 weeks, you get this sudden burst of energy and a new lease of life after the trauma of the first trimester? I’m calling bullshit on this. Well this time around anyway. Maybe it’s because I am busy with two kids or maybe it’s my age but this body has been struggling. Tiredness is something I cannot shift and trouble sleeping doesn’t help. I am prone to headaches and can become very out of breath, very quickly. All my blood work is fine and I am taking my prenatal vitamins plus iron so I think my body is just having a hard time. I have to say I have not been enjoying my pregnancy as I thought I would.

At my 20 week private scan, the consultant detected a low lying placenta (placenta previa) so he has advised me to take as much rest as possible and to avoid heavy lifting and sporting activities. For once in my life I am more than happy to take it easy! There is a good chance that the placenta will move up and out of the way so I am keeping positive.

I am still fuming that this was not even detected at my public scan – not a mention of it. My advice to anyone who is pregnant – get a private scan. I know not everyone can afford it but even if you can have your 20 week one done privately it is so worth it. I cannot recommend the guys at the MD Clinic enough – the have a Facebook page solely dedicated to their gynaecology clinic and have included the link here if you would like to contact them for more information.

To Do List

The great thing about having two before (one of each kind) is that we practically have everything we need! The only purchase I plan on making is a Chicco Next To Me Crib. Now part of me is secretly gutted as I love baby shopping but then I think of the money we are saving and I get over myself, very quickly. I am, however, planning on a little baby clothing shopping spree (and in which colour, I am not saying for now lol). I cannot wait to pick up the baby gros, the vests, the vomit catchers, and the oh so tiny nappies!! I have been online window shopping and getting excited already.

Bottle v Boob

I bottle fed my last two and I would really like to give breastfeeding a try this time. My daughter really struggled with formula so I am hoping breast milk will be the right choice this time around. It is something that I have always wanted to do but didn’t for a variety of reasons. I have signed up for classes in the hospital and hoping to do a private class too. I have to say I am very nervous about trying to breastfeed as I know nothing about it – I guess I am worried as so many women don’t get through the first few weeks. Any advice or guidance on this, guys, is most welcome! I don’t come from a breastfeeding family so my support network is very limited.

Well, that is that for now! I feel I am coming into the more interesting half of pregnancy now so I plan on writing a few more updates before d-day. I will definitely give you guys a look at the 4D scans when that happens; I am really looking forward to seeing my little girl or little boy (ha, you thought you had me there) in 4D!

Fingers and toes crossed that at my next scan, all bits are where they need to be and I can look forward to a complication free birth.

Trish xx

I breastfed 4 of mine after CSection and found it so much better for myself but I always say to new mums you can’t beat yourself up over it as it don’t work for everyone but there is nothing to worry about if you want to ask me anything no problem

Thanks Esther – I really want to try it but don’t plan on giving myself a hard time of it doesn’t work out. I think the more people I can ask questions of, the better my chances so really appreciate your support x

I went to Claire boyles breastfeeding class and found it brilliant. Also the one in the hospital after baby arrived. Breastfed with no issues. Good luck

Thankfully I’ve had a very easy experience with breastfeeding as my two took to it straight away which I know is not the case all the time. The breastfeeding feeding clinic in blarney on a Monday at 3 pm is a great help too, even to chat to other mums regarding the breastfeeding. My biggest bit of advice is to not stress about it at all and try feeding bubs very often to begin with, as if they get hungry , they will fuss and then the whole situation gets difficult. Best of luck with it all.

This is great advice, thank you. The clinic won’t be possible for me as I will have my other 2 kids on my hands at that time. Will keep an eye out for a morning one if I can
